Pattern Background Tutorial!

Ok, I feel like I'm letting a big secret go by doing this since these really aren't that hard to make but this has been requested several times so I guess I'll do it. And for the purpose of this tutorial, you may use the image I provide you with. I don't want anyone pulling apart my graphics to make these things though. Do it and you'll regret it. .___.

Let's begin! ^.^ We'll be using the background I created for the Kai (Blood+) welcome sign:

Click!

Copy and paste it into Photoshop 7 then go up to Filter> Pattern Maker.

Example

Ok, your image should pop up in the pattern maker and your cursor should look like a plus sign. Draw a rectangle over the image with your cursor and then select 'Generate.'

Example

The image should have transformed. We aren't finished though! You probably noticed how boxy the pattern looks (if it doesn't appear this way, you're lucky but should probably stick through the rest of the tutorial. x] ). To fix this, we're going to play with our settings. First, find the offset drop box and select verticle instead of none.

Example

The amount should automatically set itself to 50%. This is perfect; don't touch it! o.o The next thing you'll want to play with is the Sample Detail. 3 (the least) will leave you with larger shapes and 21 (the greatest) will leave you with much smaller shapes. Experiment with these and you'll see what I mean. Also feel free to experiment with the Smoothness option and click generate to change your pattern.

Example

Alright, keep playing with the options until you find a pattern you like and you don't need to change any of your settings when you do this. It randomizes itself anyway. When you find a pattern you like, select 'Ok.' Your image will automatically transform into the pattern you made.

Example

If you plan on using this as a shop background, you'll need to know what it to crop it too so that the pattern repeats itself smoothly. Fortunately for you, it happens to be the same for everyone (unless you offset it differently) and I've already found it for you. xD Could this get any easier? Ok, because I don't believe PS7 allows you to customize your crop in pixels, we're gonna do this the long way. Go to Select> All and copy your pattern.

Example

Next, go to File> New and set your new image's width to 256 pixels and height to 128 pixels.

Example

Finally, go up to Edit> Paste. It doesn't matter where the pattern lands on your new image. From any point (as long as you're at size 256x128) your pattern will repeat itself perfectly. Save it and use it as your own shop background if you like! You're finished!
